  • Infinity Ward has rolled out a new update for Call of Duty Modern: Warfare.
  • The patch weighs in at a hefty 30 GB with players voicing their discontent with yet another disproportionately large update.
  • Fans are left pondering what exactly warrants such a large download file.

In the early hours of this morning, developer Infinity Ward pushed out a new update ushering in a slew of updates and improvements to both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and adjacent standalone battle royale shooter, Warzone.

Infinity Ward explains:

A title update and playlist update will begin going out across all platforms tonight at 11PM PST! Click the link to see a list of fixes, what’s coming to #ModernWarfare multiplayer, Special Operations, #Warzone, and more!

30 GB Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Update

As the update went live across all platforms, players met with an all familiar sight – the update weighs in at a chunky 30 GB. They aren’t too pleased about it, either, if we take ’30 GB’ trending on Twitter as a barometer of sentiment towards yet another hefty download.

Coupled with the base install and previous patches, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now requires over 200 GB of free storage space. The sheer size of the update and the fact its mandatory has players deleting other games just to make space.

New Maps, Bug Fixes, Balance Changes, and Modified Special Operations

Bundled into the 30 GB update is a new Gunfight map, dubbed Aisle 9, a new Multiplayer map called Hardhat, the Call of Duty Endowment ‘Fearless’ Pack, and a twist on the Special Operations mode.

Infinity Ward has also rejigged the Playlists for Modern Warfare and Warzone as well as introduced a raft of fixes and balance changes. You can check out the full patch notes on Infinity Ward’s official site.

How exactly this can stack up to 30 GB is a mystery many players are tackling with as they patiently wait for the download to complete.

Most egregious of all is that we are likely to see a similarly large patch next time around and with each successive update moving forward. Publisher Activision aims to keep supporting Warzone alongside future mainline Call of Duty entries well into the next-generation of consoles.
